Hydraulic Cylinders

Hydraulic cylinder application

The hydraulic cylinder is an important part of the hydraulic circuit. A lot is possible with the help of a hydraulic cylinder, which is not possible with normal manpower. Think of a tractor, forklift, bulldozer or truck. For example, for lifting, pushing, digging or drilling, these machines need a hydraulic cylinder.

Parts of hydraulic cylinder

A hydraulic cylinder consists of the following parts:

Piston and piston rod

The piston and piston rod are usually welded together. Sometimes it is possible to separate both parts from each other.

Cylinder jacket and cylinder base

The cylinder jacket and cylinder base of the hydraulic cylinder are also welded together in most cases.

Cylinder head, sub-assembly and rod end mounting

These parts of the hydraulic cylinder are installed as standard.

Hydraulic cylinder operation

For example, with a hydraulic cylinder it becomes easier to lift or push. But how does the hydraulic cylinder help in this?

By pumping the hydraulic fluid into the hydraulic cylinder under low pressure, the piston rod will move linearly. The fluid is discharged to the other side of the piston, so the hydraulic cylinder performs an enormous transfer of power. This makes it possible to push, as well as pull.

Product range hydraulic cylinders

At Sparepartsholland we offer different types of hydraulic cylinders: single-acting and double-acting cylinders:

With a single-acting cylinder, the hydraulic fluid is pumped into the cylinder, and the cylinder moves back using an internal compression spring.

A double-acting cylinder has 2 hydraulic connections. The hydraulic fluid is pumped into the cylinder as in the single-acting cylinder. The cylinder then moves linearly again. By pumping the hydraulic fluid to the other connection, the cylinder moves back again.

In addition to single-acting and double-acting hydraulic cylinders, Sparepartsholland offers the following hydraulic cylinders:

– Hydraulic cylinder with 3/8″ port

– Hydraulic cylinder with end plug hole

– Hydraulic cylinder with pipe end

– Industrial ball jointted hydraulic cylinder

– Hydraulic telescopic cylinder

– Hydraulic brake cylinder with inner spring

Difference single-acting and double-acting hydraulic cylinders

One of the most frequently asked questions always remains: “What is the difference between a single-acting cylinder and a double-acting cylinder?”. Below we will explain this as simply as possible.

Both a single-acting cylinder and a double-acting cylinder use a liquid (oil) for starting. A single-acting cylinder has 1 port, and a double-acting cylinder has 2 ports for the ingress of oil.

Single acting hydraulic cylinder

As described above, a single-acting hydraulic cylinder has 1 port through which the oil is pumped to 1 side. To move back, a single-acting cylinder does not use oil that is pumped back, but, for example, gravity. A spring is also sometimes used with smaller cylinders.

A single-acting hydraulic cylinder is often a plunger cylinder. This means that there is a rod (hollow or solid) in the cylinder. When the oil is pumped, this rod extends. A single-acting cylinder has a number of advantages.

Advantages single-acting hydraulic cylinder

A single-acting hydraulic cylinder has 1 port. This allows the oil to flow in one direction and provide (pushing) force.

The main advantages of a single-acting hydraulic cylinder are:

  • Simple operation
  • Inexpensive / Cheaper
  • Compact design
  • Very reliable

Double acting hydraulic cylinder

Because a double-acting cylinder has 2 ports, the cylinder not only produces pushing force, but also pulling force. A double-acting hydraulic cylinder therefore does not use gravity or a spring. A double-acting cylinder also has some major advantages.

Advantages double-acting hydraulic cylinder

A double acting hydraulic cylinder has 2 ports. The oil can be pumped in 2 directions in this way.

The main advantages of a double-acting hydraulic cylinder are:

  • Hydraulic pulling and pushing force
  • Efficiency
  • Speed
  • Extremely accurate

Quality of hydraulic cylinder

Sparepartsholland manufactures its hydraulic cylinders all in-house. Manufacturing a hydraulic cylinder in-house has the advantage that Sparepartsholland is on top of quality.

Buying a hydraulic cylinder at Sparepartsholland therefore means that you buy a hydraulic cylinder made of high-quality steel. The piston rod and piston jaws are chrome plated. This surface treatment makes the steel smooth. This increases resistance and limits wear to a minimum, which ensures that your hydraulic cylinder has a long service life.
