Double-acting hydraulic hand pumps

A double-acting hydraulic hand pump operates a cylinder that extends and retracts hydraulically. Choose a configuration with suitable directional control, oil supply and connections. This collection includes hand pumps with and without oil tanks, with different displacements.

Which configuration suits your installation?

Hand pump without tank

For installations with a separate oil reservoir. Check tank mounting, oil supply and fastening before choosing a separate pump.

Compare the pump models shown above for your selected delivery country and check the required reservoir arrangement for each model.

Hand pump with oil tank

Pump and reservoir combined. Choose pump displacement and tank capacity separately: a larger tank does not automatically deliver more oil per stroke. Check mounting position and handle clearance.

Select a pump-and-reservoir combination shown above for your selected delivery country and compare its pressure rating and usable oil capacity.

BSP or NPTF connection

Compare thread type, nominal size and sealing with your hoses and fittings. A 3/8 inch BSP connection and a 3/8 inch NPTF connection are not interchangeable. Check the selected variant.

How to choose a double-acting hand pump

  • Cylinder and directional control: check that the pump and valve can supply both cylinder chambers alternately and handle the return flow.
  • Displacement: compare the specified pump volume with the cylinder’s oil requirement. This affects the number of handle movements required.
  • Working pressure: check the permitted pressure of the selected pump, cylinder, hoses and couplings. Maximum pressure differs between variants.
  • Oil capacity: choose sufficient usable reservoir capacity for the complete movement, allowing for changing oil levels and the specified fill quantity.
  • Connections and mounting: check cylinder, tank and any suction connections, fastening dimensions and handle clearance.
  • Package contents: check whether tank, handle, suction tube and filter are included. Do not assume that the cylinder and hoses are supplied.
A double-acting cylinder and a double-stroke pump are different concepts. Double-acting here refers to hydraulic cylinder operation in both directions. Double-stroke describes the pumping mechanism. Check the valve function and hydraulic diagram; the number of ports alone is not enough.

Manual operation of double-acting cylinders

A hand pump is useful for intermittent operation, adjustment, maintenance and suitable service or emergency functions. Suitability depends on pressure, oil requirement, mounting and control.

Does your cylinder use hydraulic power in one direction and return through load or spring force?

Oil tank and upgrades to existing hydraulics

A separate pump needs a suitable oil supply. Compare tank fastening and connections: a tank does not automatically fit every pump.

This collection also includes a cordless-drill-driven hydraulic pump kit for compatible tipper trailers. It is a retrofit option, not a conventional double-acting hand pump. Check the existing circuit and required directional control.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from a single-acting hand pump?

A double-acting cylinder is powered hydraulically during extension and retraction. The pump installation must supply both chambers and handle return flow. A single-acting cylinder normally returns through load, gravity or a spring.

Is every double-stroke pump suitable for a double-acting cylinder?

No. Double-stroke describes the pump mechanism, not necessarily the cylinder control. Check that the pump, valve and hydraulic diagram are suitable.

How do I choose displacement and tank capacity?

Displacement affects the number of strokes required. Usable tank capacity must suit the installation’s oil requirement and changing oil level. Also compare working pressure and operating data.

Can I connect any pump with 3/8 inch ports directly?

Not on nominal size alone. Check BSP or NPTF, internal or external threads and sealing. Use suitable fittings and check the function of each port.
